I turned 59 last week. In the 30+ years I played correspondence chess from about 1989 - 2009, my rating was never more than about 1800, but I remember corresponding and chatting with many people around the world, it always struck me that Americans, despite their material posessions, standard of living, business and educational opportunities, gym club memberships, life coaches etc. are a pretty unhappy group. It does not seem to matter which political party controls congress, or who occupies the whitehouse, gallup polls in the last 30+ years show americans think the country is on the wrong track most of the time. Americans complain about their jobs, relationships, communities, and situations more than citizens of other countries who seem happier, despite having to live with fewer material things. I wonder why?

A colleague of mine once remarked that some study claimed that Finland was the second happiest place on Earth. "They've obviously never been to Finland!"
