Just back from the Dawn Parade and Remembrance Service.
Very sad remembering all those poor lads who gave their lives
    100 years ago.

Any Newfoundlanders who observed today with the Kiwis and Aussies?

So many thoughts come to mind on occasions like this but the one that sticks in my mind is, "Why does man not learn from history"?

The Dawn Service honoured the dead from Australia, New Zealand and Turkey.
The Turkish National Anthem is played and a Turkish Representative recited
    the famous Ataturk speech:

Those heroes that shed their blood
    And lost their lives.
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
    Therefore, rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side
Here in this country of ours,
    You, the mothers,
Who sent their sons from far away countries
    Wipe away your tears,
Your sons are now lying in our bosom
    And are in peace
After having lost their lives on this land they have
    Become our sons as well”.

I trust that the 25,000 British dead, and the 10,000 French and 1,000 Indians were also in the thoughts of those who attended the Dawn Service.

There's a very good 7 part TV dramatization that the Australians have made that I think could serve as a kind of tribute. Very well done. Gripping, awful and respectful. Worth checking out. Don't be put off by its somewhat cheesy trailers. The episodes themselves tell the story very well, right from the appalling conditions in the trenches, all the way up to the dysfunction of the military command and the scandalous way the whole campaign was reported in the newspapers down under and back in Britain and France..

It's ANZAC Day - honouring the Anzacs and their foes.

Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day are observed and honour the fallen from all nations.
