About time we brought some plain old nonsense back to this Forum.

In another thread ketch mentions Anand wishes he never see Carlsen's
face and mentions the song 'Maggie May.'

"Maggie I wish I'd never seen your face."

So we can now update chess notation using well known songs
and the artists that perfomed them.

    He has played an Elvis.

That is when someone sacs a piece against you and you give it back.

    "Return to Sender."

    ----

White is doing a Frank Ifield.

He is playing the game from memory.

    "I Remember You."

    --------

That game is a Nat King Cole.

A masterpiece has just been played.

    "Unforgettable."

    ------

    My favourite (so far)

    White has a Janowski Rook.

A White Rook on the 7th gobbling up pawns.

"A Walk in the Black Forest.' by Horst Janowski.

So have fun and join in...you know you want to.

Nice break in the action thread, greenpawn.

    Thanks.

Much prefer Dorothy Lamour, who introduced the song in 1942 (way before your time, apparently).

The 'No more tears' move, because of the line:

"My love life is boring me to tears"

because it results in a stale mate.....

    Sounds like fun.

(Disclaimer: songs were chose for popularity reasons)

    "That it Shocking Blue"
A player just left his queen hanging
    (Shocking Blue - Venus)

    "Black plays the Britney Spears"
Black plays a bad opening which led to a defeat last time already
(Britney Spears - Hit me baby one more time)

"White queen is a real spice girl"
White's queen looks intimidating but in fact threatens nothing
    (Spice Girls - Wannabe)

    "White is in REM state"
White plays an outlandish opening because the preferred ones brought no success
    (R.E.M. - Losing my religion)

Meh.. I should think of better ones.

The Lucena endgame shall, from now on, be the Simon and Garfunkel endgame. Because you're building a Bridge over Troubled Ranks.

We've all seen an Osmonds game - one wherein there are Crazy Horses.

There are, of course, no Orff games, because we're to blame for our copious blunders ourselves; O Fortuna stays out of it. (Unless you want a Puer and a Puellula to play in Cellula... but that isn't chess. And though it's common to play In Taberna, Bibere while you do so is bad for your game.)

Blitz can be renamed Helter Skelter, if it's played fast enough that the players'VE GOT BLISTERS ON THEIR FINGERS!
(Speaking of which album... Piggies on the seventh rank?)

The first move of a pawn is its Madness move, because it's allowed to go One! Step! Beyond!

If you play a whole game according to Philidor's theory, you have a Bach game: a Bauernkantate. Oh, and during the game, schweigt stille, plaudert nicht! And drink your coffee.

And finally... when you've just "sacced" your Queen of the Blacks, and you're now going after the White one... dann kocht der Hölle Rache in deinem Herzen!

    Hi Handy Andy,

    Join in, don't nit-pick.

Dorothy Lamour never had a No1 hit with it!.

Hi Shallow Blus - One Step Beyond was first done by Prince Buster.

    My thread, I can nit-pick 🙂

    ------

Doing a Botvinnik. (full pre-game preparation.)

Botvinnik prepared for cetain opponents who smoked by getting his trainer
to blow smoke in his face.

'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' - by the Platters.

He's getting Tal'd. (Tals infamous stare.)

"What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For?" by Emil Ford and the Checkmates!

When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
    Go ask Alice
    I think she'll know
    When logic and proportion
    Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"

From "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane.

    Hi Paullli

    Thank you.

But I am not going to write all that out everytime I note up a game.

We are not looking for songs that mention chess.
(There is a garbage musical out there somewhere that is called Chess.)

The object of this exercise is to find an artist whose song we can
turn into a piece of chess notation. Please try and keep up. 😉

    Example:

    "Black just played a Hollie."

Meaning they did not examine the position long enogh.

'Just One Look' by the Hollies.

I know the original was by Doris Troy but the better known
version is by The Hollies and if I write:

    "'Black just played a Doris"

People will think I mean Doris Day and that the Deadwood Stage
is a coming up over the hill to trample on the chess pieces.

    "I am a Rook
    I am a Pawn Island"
    ~ Simon & Garfunkel

    "Daylight turns into night
We try and find the answer but it's nowhere in sight
It's always the same and you know who's to blame
You know what I'm sayin', still we keep on playin'

Chess games, that's all I get from you is
Chess games, and I can't take it anymore
Chess games, don't wanna play the
    Chess games"

You want "plain old nonsense" but no nit-picking and nothing less than a No.1 hit.

A Dorothy Lamour is a memorable move that looks great in a sarong but doesn't yodel.

And Dorothy is still No.1 in my book.

"Who knows where the time goes" by Sandy Denny - my personal mantra for when I've mismanaged the clock during a game.

And of course there's Nigel Blackwell.🙂

    Hi Andy,

    A Lamour is in.

    'White played a Lamour.'

White has taken a brilliant idea played in a previous game and screwed it but still won.

(Never heard the original - does it have the mouth organ bit in it.)
