    1. f3......any
    2. King f2.......and black assumes they are playing a moron.

I have a surprising number of wins with it, like this short 22 move game:

Probably because the opponent gets over confident.

Yes, it is the psychological aspect of chess.

Actually, the Hammerschlag has a surprisingly good win percentage for white. It is actually tactically sound, but it must not be played unless you know what you are doing.

We always called it the Fox attack, when black plays f6,Kf7 we called it the Fox Defense. I forgot the Hammerschlag tag. Thanks for the refresher. 🙂

As with some other off-beat openings, such as 1. b4, if Black tries to bowl it over with a quick knockout, he may over-reach himself and get into trouble. I sometimes try such openings against players rated lower than myself, but I wouldn't risk it against one 100+ higher.

If you have the first 6 moves in mind and play instantly it works well in 5 minute games, the opponent spends a minute going "huh?"
By then you have a rock solid defensive position set up and are a minute ahead.
I do it all the time.

This opening has been around for a long time. I learned of it from a guy rated about 1900 when I was in tech school in Denver, Lowry air force base and found the chess club in Denver and he called it 'the fox'. Of course I was to new to chess to be able to figure out how to win against it.

The Hammerschlag is pretty good. You should try giving the Fred defense a try.

Now the king is safe and you can develop your pieces by getting hits on the queen. The development lead and open lines can lead to some spectacular attacks for black.

If you consider this safe for Black, I would be happy to play it out as White.

You're on! Unfortunately 1) you are already at your max of 6 concurrent games with non-subs. and 2) I'll be away from Internet access for 3 weeks starting 18 Sept. If you are willing to up your max and accept a 21-day delay in the middle, I'm game to test the opening.

    Cheers,

Kilgore: I appreciate that I have a rating advantage here, so, to make it slightly more of level playing field, I promise to play like Richard Teichmann (with one eye).
