SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle voters have elected a socialist to city council for the first time in modern history.

Kshama Sawant's defeated 16-year incumbent Richard Conlin .

Sawant, a 41-year-old college economics professor, first drew attention as part of local Occupy Wall Street protests that included taking over a downtown park and a junior college campus in late 2011. She then ran for legislative office in 2012, challenging the powerful speaker of the state House, a Democrat. She was easily defeated.

This year, though, she pushed a platform that resonated with the city. She backed efforts to raise the minimum wage to $15; called for rent control in the city where rental prices keep climbing; and supports a tax on millionaires to help fund a public transit system and other services.

I was listening to a someone interview people on the street and asking them what a socialist was. Most had no idea.

It used to be that the term socialist was a dirty word, but thanks to public education most have no idea behind the history of socialism nor do they even fully understand what it is.

So I would say that if such candidates succeed, then the socialists will come pouring out of the wood work once they now their cover is good.

However, if they are not successful it would be a good clue just to run as progressives instead.

I agree with you. I really see no difference between the two . I think they are synonymous.

It's official then, right wing Americans do not know what a socialist is or what socialism might look like.

While I would like to think that it is the wave of the future, it is probably just an anomaly.

It seems like a bit of a hasty generalization to infer from a mere city council member-elect some kind of nation-wide trend.

Unfortunately there are only a few people like whodey who "fully understand."

Left wing Americans do not know what a socialist is or what socialism looks like. Otherwise they would steer clear of it.

Liberty and socialism do not go together. Equality is there only because everyone does not get rewarded for working harder to better their lives and are held down by government. Fraternity would be sentimental only to the right as they sit with their grandchildren telling of puking in the bathrooms of the nearest sorority hall. Do not continually fight me on stuff robbie ol boy. Get back in there and tell em about 911 some more.

I am sorry but this is the biggest pile of bull that i have had the misfortune to stumble across and I used to work on a farm!

The assertion that you proffered was that a liberal would stay away because he would not know what socialism was, you were asked why, given that these are the principles upon which socialism is founded (liberty, fraternity and equality) and instead of answering the question launch into some irrelevant and quite frankly illogical tirade of what socialism isn't, its logical fallacy bumper bonanza fallacy of the century, super concentrated! and you must be called out for it. I am sorry to have to do it, but one does not reset a broken arm without some discomfort!
