Whilst I tear my hair out over wolfgang59's latest, here we some others.

Cryptic in nature but no definition in them, as all the answers are surnames of famous chess players.

    1 Ctrl-alt-delete? Delete-ctrl-alt!

    2 A conjunction

3 Change smoothly over the year

    4 An angel in disguise

5 A light cloak worn by a Spaniard?

6 First man to reach the south

7 Learner overtaking this vehicle gets points

8 Jean Luc Picard’s enemy returns.

9 Terrible ruler with a beef, we hear

10 Warlike planet on edge of space

I will add the number of letters as a further clue to any you struggle on.

(I am quite proud of number one, by the way!)

I think clue one should have been:

1 Ctrl-alt-delete? Delete delete, delete ctrl - alt!

    So much for being smug.

Correct, as were all other answers. Two left, and I now give the first letter.

3 Change smoothly over the year (M, 6)

9 Terrible ruler with a beef, we hear (I, 8)

Fixations (as usual) were a pain!
I was convinced I was looking for an anagram (terrible) of ruler rather than Ivan the terrible and that beef was some sort of moan/complaint: but got it in an instant once I saw the I.
In the other I was absorbed with the prospect of Smyslov with the other letters round the Y until he said it was six letters. Of course in crosswords you often have check letters rather sooner and it is only in puzzles like this you realise how often they are relied on.
