Just goes to show you what a crock international human rights really is.

There are plenty of other countries where women have much worse lives, but they choose to attack Ireland for political correctness. What a joke, both the UN and those who give them any authority.

What a stupid remark. There is no country in the world that does not merit scrutiny to ensure human rights are defended.

In may ways women in Ireland have endured a very poor deal.

an Irish government report found that approximately 10,000 women are known to have entered a Magdalen Laundry from 1922 until the closure of the last Laundry in 1996.

The UN would rather pick on oil rich Gaddafi for a potential genocide than they would stop a real genocide in places like the Sudan and now Iraq with ISIS.

Oh, and Israel building walls and trying to stop bombardment is the root of all evil in the world, don't ya know.

The UN has no more legitimacy whatsoever.

The UN opposed the American and British invasion of Iraq. Who was wrong?

Sudan, Iraq and Syria demonstrate the catastrophe arising when there is a failed state and the problems require a stable government as the only solution.

Israel places an economic embargo on Gaza and controls the key economic resources of all Palestinians. The only government capable of resolving issues in Palestine is the apartheid regime in Israel.

The UN accepts Israel's right to exist within the borders established in 1967. It does not accept Israel's right to commit war crimes. It does not accept that Gaza or even Palestine have sufficient autonomy for Israel to neglect its duties to the people of Palestine.

Over and over, the lack of effective, democratic government lies at the root of these terrible problems.

The UN has immense respect and support from around the world. It also has enemies of whom the greatest is the rogue state USA. The US expects to control key UN resources in such a way that the UN can be manipulated for US interests. The US is unlikely ever to accept accountability to any UN body, for example in respect of either human rights abuse or war crimes by the US and its allies. Where the US does promote international accountability is to trade bodies enforcing the interests of multi national corporations in opposition to elected governments. The current negotiations for a TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) is a disastrous extension of that corporate power which citizens of both the US and Europe seem too ignorant to protect against. Again, as I say, this is a type of international agreement that sidesteps the UN with all its concern for legitimacy and instead promotes corporate ambitions.

Government or corporations? The battle is on and it has largely gone to the corporations in the past forty years.

    Hi Duchess.

The truth of the matter is that Ireland's constitution has to be changed by referendum, it can't be changed before the changes are brought to the people. The government of the day couldn't get a referendum through right now if it offered blowjobs and pie.
