    Wes won $100,000 - (minus his $10.000 entrance fee.)

    Which is not too bad for winning a chess event.

    In the spring of '72 I won a flask for coming 2nd in a local event.
    Then Fischer happened. (the folliwing year it was two flasks!).

    I do remember winning a chess set in the mid 70's.
    A chess set? 'Oh Good, I don't have one of those.'.

    Think the most I won was a share of £450 divided by 3. Which was OK.
    At the time I was earning £30 p/w.

    And several amateurs won $40k.

    But it is notable that the organizer ran the tournament despite the ~550 entries, far short of break-even.

    One more thing, the Open/master section had guaranteed $ prizes for the top 50 places; so almost a 50% chance to recoup the high entry fee
