Mandatory minimum sentences were set up in the "tough on crime" years of the US criminal system. Since then, prison population has quadrupled.

How good is a system that gives life imprisonment without parole to someone possessing the right amounts of drugs but only gives 11 years to a child rapist?

Instead of life, they should execute. The problem is that they don't so we get to keep paying to have them housed and to feed them.

You say execution is too expensive? Try just using a bullet or rope. It doesn't need to be expensive, but for some reason the government likes to make things expensive. It is almost as if the government doesn't need to actually pay for anything, just hold a person at gun point and take a person's money.

Oh wait, that's exactly what the government does.

In the Catholic church, child rapists don't even get jail time.

But as far as illicit drugs go, I've seen too many children die or have damage done to their brains with illegal drugs as well. Then there is the toll it takes on the paents of children. How many drug addicted parents have we read or personally known who have wrecked the lives of their children?

Not to mention corporations that defraud the public, and get off by paying a fine without admitting guilt.

Mandatory minimums take the judiciousness out of judges. Every case is different. These laws also gained popularity among those who thought judges gave favorable treatment to their cronies.

I would go along with your anti corporate mentality, if it were consistent. In short don't whine about the unemployment that would result from GM going under, or any other of the "too big to fail" entities.

How about the workers sharing in the judgements against corporations?
