During my time online I have come across many people who are alot smarter than me and have been playing chess for longer but are much weaker than I am. I have come across many switched on people who are like - 800 rated. What is the reason for this?

being smart doesn't help you one bit. chess improvement is 99% sweat & elbow grease. all the improving players I know put huge amount of work into their chess.

    Wittgenstein, the Cambridge philosopher, said
"He who knows too much finds it hard not to lie"
When he played chess he always lost. But this was not his fault - he was a good chess player and a brilliant mind. He just could not be sure that the chess board - and even the table on which it stood - really existed. I think that this must explain any victory I myself have had against more highly rated players, not to mention the way the Pakistan cricket team lost to Ireland

thats b-coz in reality they are not smart. any intelligent amateur will make it over +1800 in couple months. for the rest of us (or you) its goal never to be achieved.

The intelligent-est people don't bother themselves playing chess.
The intelligent people who do play chess realize it has nothing to do with intelligence.
The people who are good at chess and think this makes them intelligent are actually the dumbest of the lot.

    Your Answer:

No matter how smart you are, if you don't learn from your mistakes, you're doomed to repeat them.
