The Oscars

I remember as a kid the Oscars was an important night.

Does anyone think the Oscars are important today? I certainly do not.

But then... we had intersting movies to get excited about.

Now we have what? Seriously, what?

I just watched the most entertaining moment of the night.
How could it have gone so wrong? 😳

So funny to hear about it today.

Evidently each side of the stage gets the envelope for each category. One side didn't get rid of a card it didn't use. That's what I heard anyhow.

It must be a blue moon out or something. I agree with you.

I used to watch the Oscars every year (and in Europe that means getting up very early).

I never watch any award shows anymore. Not even the BAFTAS.

I actually remember the Oscars which started the disillusionment: the one where Forrest Gump beat Pulp Fiction for best movie.

Over the years I've stopped watching talk shows; I just find most actors boring or they're just pushing the rubbish they're in (unlike the classic interview with Dustin Hoffman who went on a tirade about having to get ip at night to pee).
It's all so blatantly product placement. Ugh.

I generally go to the cinema once a week. And I can safely say the last 5 years have seen the quality of the films free fall.
No country for old men, the grand Budapest hotel... a few highlights in sacks full of crap.

I do have a theory about it.
I think TV series' have become ever more better the last decade. Especially with channels which allow swearing and a more realistic approach to acting.
Their budgets have sky-rocketted and you can tell a better story in 10 hours than in 2,5. You can take more time to build things up and explore sub-plots.

The subject of when the Oscars were at their zenith in terms of cultural influence does not seem to merit any hits when entered on google search, which is evidence in itself against their cultural significance. However, imo, one highlight is the 1973 rejection by Brando of the award for his performance in The Godfather which is worth a google for those interested. His rejection of the oscar is unique before or after 1973, and the oscars after that became more of a platform for political opinion.

Boy am I bad- the bands name is Radio Moscow, the album is called Magic Dirt.
