Strange choice I was going to say... I need to read his lyrics thoroughly to try to understand his works better before I make up my mind.

It was for his life work, changing the face of American folklore, his poetry viewed as powerful, songs like 'blowin in the wind' 'hard rain's a-gonna fall' 'masters of war' and more, not how he sang which a lot of people hate but the contents of his songs viewed as poetry.

He changed the course of American folk music.

But still, you could have knocked me over with a feather reading the news.

So that adds to his Oscar and firmly fixes his place in history.

    This is a big deal.

In fact I think the literature Nobel is the most difficult to Award. A lot depends to be able to read the original language. And for most languages there is probably no expert on the committee.
However the Nobel rule (done most for world peace) might imply that a literally work should have some broad Distribution.

No, the writers/poets who win the Nobel Prize in literature are not awarded for broad distribution of their work - there are other literary motivations.

His music is so terrible they probably felt sorry for him.

I can't figure it out. Usually the Nobel group makes great choices like Obama for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I imagine you could do SO much better, eh. It's easy to criticize isn't it. Not so easy to do what he did though. I gather the words meant nothing to you.

You do realize they did not award the Nobel prize for his singing ability, right?

    Here is the procedure:

    http://www.nobelprize.org/nomination/peace/process.html

Same procedure in Sweden for the other prizes.

I quote: The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2016 is awarded to Bob Dylan
“for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.
