Castling

I find that I am unable to castle on red hot pawn. I've tried moving the castle next to the king with the expectation the king will jump over the castle and assume its proper protected place. However, that doesn't happen. Then I tried moving the king two spaces (king side castling). The king goes two spaces and parks next to the rook but the rook doesn't jump over the king to assume its proper place...Is there a specific incantation I should be using? Help much appreciated. It's difficult winning games -- although doable -- without castling.
