    Why can't I do it? The king has never moved, the rook involved has never moved, the squares between the king and the rook involved are unoccupied, the king is not in check, and the king does not cross over or end on a square in which it would be in check.

    If you're talking about Game 10471957 , I suggest you check each of the points you've made against the game board. I can't be more specific about a game in progress, but one of the statements you made appears to be incorrect.

    lists these points:
    All the squares between your king and rook are unoccupied.
    The king has not moved yet
    The rook involved in the castle has not moved yet
    The king is not in check
    The king will not move into check
    The king will not move through a square being attacked

    Better check out "en passant" and "stalemate" too.
