Is it possible to find out how long an opponent is going to be on holiday?

other than sending an pm to ask, no.

A shame because if he is on holiday he is not going to be able to reply.
Perhaps it is a modification to the site that would be useful.

People on holiday are generally here, but go on "holiday" to avoid timeouts

You can put it in your profile, just be specific as to the year because you're likely to forget about removing it when you come back.

And even if you have an expected end date, the vacation setting can be extended (assuming enough days are available). It can also be terminated early. I've done both in the past.
