7. Your opponent was not cheating. You lost because you suck at chess.

'force' is different than 'can't'. You can get a mate, but you can't force it.

It's worth giving a try, no sense in resigning without at least making an effort (unless your playing a high rated player).

Once you realize you're not going to force it, you can resign.
