ok ocasionally go on blitz and don't know how to reply to pepes who merely say 'hi'. how do i respond?

There is a small text entry box on the lower right side of the screen. Click there and then type your text, and when you are done hit your enter key on the keyboard.

Good luck

Nice to meet you

or any number of other pleasantries

You could also say, "Are you any good"?
