    To anonimously show that you like the posting.
    The more recommendations a posting have, the better it is, in some aspect.

    So the "alert moderator" button is to alert the mods to unruly posts?

    Whats the point of of having recomendations?

    So you can view the recommendation list and see what others like. Sometimes the list is good, and you'll find a gem... sometimes it's littered with failure. I read through (skim) the list and might see a good thread I had missed.

    Right now the hot topic at top is a fix for the RHP game explorer.

    Yes, alerts tell mods they might want to check a post and either remove it or let it go.
