I mentioned this type of thing in a post today and so will finally get the finger out:

How to use google to search RHP forums
We all know that the onsite functions aren't working too well. I have however recently tested google and found that, using the correct search terms, the majority of posts can be found with fair ease. (I also keep nagging them to update the spiders to here wich usually pulls in a good few hits a day after I repost the URLs).

Rule 1) google sees redhotpawn, chessatwork and timeforchess as different places. I have found instances when I can find a post on one site and not another.

Rule 2) The magic. A proper google seach term...
    for searching posts
    use the following google search
    site:redhotpawn.com inurl:board -inurl:threadlist ???? ????
(The question marks are the text you are looking for)

    for a thread title search
    site:redhotpawn.com inurl:board inurl:threadlist ???? ????
Amazing what a minus sign can do, isn't it?

    Happy searching!

edit: by the way, these aren't the best possible search terms, but don't take up too much tying.
My big worry, is this the right forum for this thread?

I don't think it works for old posts though, does it?

Nice work. Its going to be really helpful seeing as the search functionality on the site is so kaput.

Or better yet. Could Russ/Chris update the search forums page so that it uses this type of searching, rather than whatever it does at the moment.

I have added a slightly modified version as default when searching now.

    Thanks Toe.

No prob. Oddly enough, doing a search from google directly gets more hits than from the google on-site bar. Pehaps they deliberetly limit it? Who knows.

That seems to be working much better now. Cheers.

Any chance u could fix the bug where when u search for a user's posts within certain dates, when u click on any other page, it jumps to that page of the users total posts. Dunno if I explained that right, but just have a search by username within dates, where there is more than 1 page of results, and click opn page 2 and u should see the dates are way out.

This method is still more effective than the insite search facility.

Besides the fact that I am permanently impersonating a queer shed-dweller, I'd say I'm just marvy.

EDIT - Wrong. I also seem to be having trouble editing my sentence(s).
