OK, at the risk of making a complete di** of myself - why not put the King in check straight away with the Rook in the study by L.Topcejev 1927?

1. Rg7+ Kxe8 2. Rxa7 stalemate.

That study from 1927 was stalemate if white tried to get the rook immediately too, R-g7+, KxN e8, RXR stalemate.
