"ATHENS, October 21. /TASS/. The Ethics Commission of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) has banned 13th world champion Garry Kasparov and former general secretary Ignatius Leong from holding any office or position in FIDE for two years, the official site said on Wednesday.

"Kasparov and Leong are both banned for a period of two years from holding any office or position within FIDE, including its member federations, continental associations or any other affiliated international organisations, as well as participating in any FIDE meeting as delegate, proxy-holder or other representative of a FIDE member," the statement said.

This guy Kasparov seems to be a great person, I don't buy what FIDE said.

but what if FIDE is right?

Gary is about to publish his book 'winter is coming' so FIDE was waiting this moment?

Sounds like a political decision because K started a rival league if I remember right.
Yes, the PCA from 1993 to 1996. Are they holding a grudge for that?

In 1993, Nigel Short won the Candidates Tournament and so qualified as challenger to Garry Kasparov for the World Chess Championship.[1]

By FIDE regulation, the bids for the World Championship final should have been decided by three parties – FIDE, the World Champion (Kasparov) and the Challenger (Short). According to Kasparov and Short, FIDE president Florencio Campomanes broke these rules by simply announcing the venue of winning bid as being Manchester. FIDE derived a substantial part of its income from the prize fund of the World Championship.

In response to this, Kasparov and Short formed the PCA, appointing Bob Rice as Commissioner. They played their world championship match under its auspices in October 1993. The match took place in the Savoy Theatre in London, under the sponsorship of The Times. Kasparov won clearly 12.5–7.5 and became PCA World Chess Champion.

"FIDE stripped Kasparov of the FIDE World Championship title, and instead held a rival match between Anatoly Karpov and Jan Timman, the two final players Short had defeated to win the Candidates Tournament. Karpov won that match, to become FIDE World Chess Champion. For the first time in chess history there were two world champions, the FIDE world champion Karpov and the PCA world champion Kasparov."

That sounds weird, why, if K was stripped of the title, why didn't it automatically go to Short who had defeated both Karpov and Timman? I was living in Jerusalem att and didn't have time to follow this particular debacle.

Kaspy ran against Ilyumzhinov in the last FIDE presidential election and lost. That is a more recent reason to hold a grudge.

The dude would hold a grudge for K just entering the race?

But still, why wasn't Short handed the championship since he beat Karpov and Timman?

    More politics probably.

Because he had set up the PCA with Kasparov, so FIDE were never going to say "Here you are Nigel, your the new FIDE World Champion".

FIDE is a joke, after WWII fide was a soviet puppet. Fischer always has to fought against this organization. After stolen his title comes corrupted people like Campomanes.... so FIDE has a very dark past (and present).

Not just for entering the race, but campaigning on an "Ilyumzhinov is hopelessly corrupt" platform. Which is true, but the fun thing about being corrupt is that you can buy / sway the election despite the truth of the accusations, which is exactly what happened.
