    The Scotch Opening
    • 3... exd4 4. Nf3xd4 Qd8h4
This is the Steinitz Variation. It is one of those dubious lines that is playable but Black has to get every move right to survive. The reason I play it sometimes is that Black can often win a pawn which can unsettle some opponents at the level I play at over the board.
      • 5. Nb1c3 Bf8b4 6. Bf1e2
This is most likely the best line for white.
        • 6... Ng8e7
I think Nf6 or Qxe4 are more commonly played.
          • 7. O-O O-O
This is probably wrong as the game continuation shows. I should have played Bxc3 to prevent White's coming horseplay. This is a good example as to why one should avoid these knife edge lines unless you know them well, have the vision of a master player, or are prepared to scour the books and databases for the best moves according to theory.
            • 8. Nd4b5 Bb4a5 9. Nc3d5 Qh4xe4
              Too late to be meaningful.
              • 10. Be2f3 Qe4g6 11. Nb5xc7 Ne7xd5
Letting the rook go and preserving the bishops temporarily.
                • 12. Nc7xa8 Nd5b4
Trying to drum up something with Nxc2 and perhaps a1.
                  • 13. Bc1d2 Nb4xc2 14. Ra1c1
White is making progress in development as well as sidestepping any potential threats.
                    • 14... Ba5xd2
On Bb6 Black loses the knight on c2
