  • 1. e4 d5 2. Nb1c3
Much more common is: exd5. 2. Nc3 allows Black to build a very strong center with 2...d4.
    • 2... d4 3. Nc3d5
Probably best is the retreat to e2 or even back to b1
      • 3... e6 4. Nd5c3
? Much better was was Nf4. Nc3 loses the knight for a pawn and gives white almost no compensation for the lost material.
        • 4... dxc3 5. bxc3 Nb8c6 6. Ng1f3 e5
!? I figured that with e5 I lost a tempo, but gained a foothold in the center and opened the lines for my light-squared bishop.
          • 7. Bf1c4 Ng8f6 8. d4
?! Hangs the e4-pawn. Though it does contest the center, it also un-doubles White's pawns, and, without looking to far, it seems there might be a way to pin the Knight on e4 after it takes the pawn. However, even though it seemed risky (taking on e4) I saw that I would have the defenses of Qe7 and Bf5. I also saw that White would have to castle and move his rook to e1 to bring another attacker to bare, giving me time to extricate my knight without pinning my queen in the process.
            • 8... exd4 9. cxd4 Nf6xe4 10. Qd1d3 Qd8e7
?! Why not Bf5 creating a discovered attack prospect on the White Queen? This was definitely more dynamic AND LESS RISKY than Qe7. Safest was probably retreating the knight to f6, followed be Be7 and 0-0. Qe7 is also bad because it blocks Black's dark-squared Bishop! This is in addition allowing pinning possibilities for White. I shouldn't make White's plan so clear. The only reason this move doesn't get a ? is that it takes white two moves to get his rook into place for the pin.
              • 11. O-O Bc8f5
                I finally get there!
                • 12. Rf1e1 O-O-O
I had not seen this resource when I decided to take the e4 pawn, but looking at the position fresh it seems obvious and strong!
                  • 13. Ra1b1 Nc6b4 14. Qd3b3
Now my queen is freed from the defense of the knight! White's plan is clear: If the knight of b4 ever moves, then White has a very strong attack on the b-file. White was likely planning either a3 or b3 here (at least that would have been the way I would have played it.)
                    • 14... Qe7f6
Getting my queen out of the way! But looking at it now, I should have taken more time to figure out where the Queen would have had the most influence! My plan here way to put pressure on the d4-pawn. Additionally, I could have attempted to protect the f-pawn with Bg6.
