By playing the Knight before the pawn to E5, black risks the pawn push by white to E5 and then the knight being chased around the board
2. Nb1c3
White covers the attack from blacks knight whilst developing a peice and confirming control of E4 and D5
2... e5
Black now states it's claim on the centre
3. a4
? Hmmm I am not a fan of using the wing pawns this early in the game, all the successful openings of chess, played by masters all really have the same principles, control the centre, develop your peices and protect your king. This move does none of the above.
3... g5
? Equally I didn't like this move either. If you are moving the pawn to fianchetto the bishop just move it the one space. move the bishop to the long diagonal and castle behind. That would be a classic defensive position. A very snug and safe king
4. b3
Ok you've supported the A pawn and freed up your black bishop, also you have created two outposts for your white bishop on B5 and C4. It looks like a good platform to launch a queenside attack
4... g4
As a rule you should always try and develop a new peice with each move in the openings, the faster you develop your peices the more peices you can attack with. This move however does limit whites knight who ideally should be on F3
5. Bc1a3
White offers the trade of black bishops before it is really known how important the black bishop will be in the forthcoming game. Maybe B2 would have been a better place for the bishop hoping to control the long diiagonal later in the game.
5... c5
The trade is declined, I thought at the time that moving the queen pawn to D6 would have been stronger, allowing blacks white bishop to enter the fray. Obviously though this pawn is crucial to the game as it pans out
