This is a quick win in the Goring Gambit. It illustrates the theme of not developing quickly and efficiently.

  • 1. e4 e5 2. Ng1f3 Nb8c6 3. d4
    This is the Scotch Game.
    • 3... exd4 4. c3
Now play can transpose into either the Goring or the Danish Gambit.
      • 4... Ng8f6
? Already an inaccuracy. In the Goring, the Danish, and the Smith-Morra gambits it is extremely risky to allow white to play e5. 4...Nf6 pretty much begs for it. Much better here was: 4...dxc3 followed by Nxc3 (Goring mainline) or Bc4 (Danish Mainline)
        • 5. e5 Nf6d5 6. Bf1c4
!? The most common move for White here is cxd4, but I didn't really care so much about the pawn, rather I wanted to get attacking as soon as possible.
          • 6... Nd5e7
? 6...Nb6 had to be better than stifling your development so badly.
            • 7. Qd1b3
              Thematic Goring Gambit move...
              • 7... b6
?? The decisive mistake. Black does not realize that his King is stalemated and his f7 square is fatally weak. Necessary is something like: 8...d5!?
