If Nd4 I think white is probably better. He continues with his policy of trying to force exchanges but now he is only a nominal pawn up and a rook still to develop.

This looks horrible but if Nd4 then Ra5 wins the Queen.

This allows a mate by blocking a vital escape square. I dont know if he was nervous about b2 or wanted to come down the d file.
