Weakening pawn moves cost games

  • 1. e4 d5
    Scandinavian defence
  • 2. exd5 Qd8xd5 3. Nb1c3 Qd5a5 4. Ng1f3 Ng8f6 5. b3 Bc8f5 6. Bc1b2 e6 7. Bf1b5
? This was probably a waste of time
  • 7... c6
However I didn't mind this pawn being on c6, his Knight cannot use this more natural square and I'm still ahead in development
  • 8. Bb5e2 h6 9. a3 Bf8d6 10. b4 Qa5c7 11. O-O e5
? Computer suggests Nh4 here followed by Bd3 (even if this means doubling pawns) to take advantage of Black's weak e-file and closed dark-square diagonal
  • 12. h3
I didn't see this and took the easy option instead
  • 12... O-O 13. Be2c4 Nb8d7 14. d3 Nd7b6 15. Bc4b3 a5 16. Rf1e1
If Black goes after the b-pawn, I get the e-pawn
  • 16... Rf8e8 17. Nc3e4
With the same idea, hitting e5
  • 17... Nf6xe4
However I wonder if Bxe4 instead was better, as dxe4 would then come without gaining tempo and b4 could be won
  • 18. dxe4 Bf5e6 19. Bb3xe6 Re8xe6 20. Bb2c3
    Now b4 is defended
  • 20... Nb6a4 21. Bc3d2 axb4 22. axb4 Re6e8
Connecting the Rooks back up, allowing the Knight to move if needed
