The Traxler Gambit 5.Nxf7

  • 1. e4 e5 2. Ng1f3 Nb8c6 3. Bf1c4 Ng8f6 4. Nf3g5 Bf8c5
!? The Traxler Gambit, a very sharp opening, Black is willingly sacrificing material for a speedy attack on the enemy King.
  • 5. Ng5xf7
White could have chosen the more stable Bxf7+ winning just a pawn but also keeping some initiative whilst destabilising the Black King.
  • 5... Bc5xf2
    6.Kxf2 Nxe4+ is uncomfortable for White e.g. 7.Kg1 Qh4 8.g3 Nxg3 9.hxg3 Qxg3+ 10.Kf1 d5 and Black at least forces a draw.
  • 6. Ke1f1 Qd8e7 7. Nf7xh8
Grabs the material advantage and removing any Rf8 possibility.
  • 7... d5
8.Bxd5 falls for Bg4 winning the Queen
  • 8. exd5 Nc6d4
    Renews the Bg4 threat
  • 9. c3
Gives the White Queen the a4 square, also hitting the Knight
  • 9... Bc8g4 10. Qd1a4 Nf6d7
Black has two pieces hanging in the position, however if 11.cxd4 there follows 11...Qf6 12.dxe5 Qf4 and the attack on the King is too strong.
  • 11. Kf1xf2
This, therefore, was the only move and had in fact been played 40 times on RHP before this game.
  • 11... Qe7h4
Qf6+ is also an option but Qh4+ instead pulls the g-pawn forward, so White loses grip on the f3 square
