Benko Gambit, Nf3 lines with a4 and Ra3, pawn push variation.

  • 1. d4
This is a Benko Gambit with 4.Nf3.
    • 1... Ng8f6 2. c4 c5 3. d5 b5 4. Ng1f3
This sideline sometimes lets white play a4 and Ra3. White should be aware of move order considerations, since an early d6, for instance, is actually not optimal for the second player.
      • 4... g6 5. cxb5 a6 6. e3 Bf8g7 7. Nb1c3 O-O 8. a4
        White's plan is clear enough.
        • 8... d6
Better was 8...Bb7 or 8...e6 to take advantage of white's pieces.
          • 9. Ra1a3 axb5 10. Bf1xb5 Bc8a6
Also possible was to try to put the knight there en route to the weak b4 square. Black's bishop can work the long diagonal.
            • 11. O-O Nb8d7 12. Bb5xa6 Ra8xa6 13. Qd1e2 Ra6b6 14. e4 Qd8a8 15. Bc1g5
It's committal but not terrible. The point is to create a weakness on the king wing and to tie down black's pieces.
              • 15... Rf8b8 16. Nc3b5 h6 17. Bg5h4 Rb6b7 18. e5
? This is the first of a few awful errors. The d-pawn is falling after the exchanges.
                • 18... dxe5 19. Nf3xe5 Nf6xd5 20. Ne5c4
? You could have won the g6 pawn.
                  • 20... g5
?! This puts the bishop where it wants to go.
                    • 21. Bh4g3 Rb8c8 22. Rf1d1
?! f4! This makes tactical and positional sense since you would both create a weakness as well as exploit black's lack of coverage near his king.
