  • 1. e4
    Very normal opening move
    • 1... g6
Bit unusual response, did not think much of it then but seems to have been a move to get my opponent's bishop out.

This is the Robatsch a.k.a. Modern Defense with 1...g6 and 2...Bg7. Black waits to see what White will do and should counterattack if White occupies the center.

A horse out early can proof to be a headache for your opponent

There comes the bishop, but my horse is covered.
        • 3. d4
Here I decided to take full advantage of the absence of his pawns in the middle field. I stepped right into his bishops line of fire but my queen is covering the pawn.
          • 3... Ng8f6
! His horse out. It is a mistake because my pawn on e4 will attack him there.
            • 4. g4
I decided to wait before I attack and have the cheek to step right into his knight's reach. Obviously I made sure that the pawn is covered. Notice how closed up black is while white open.
              • 4... h6
? Here black confused me. Why move his pawn to h6 and not h7??
                • 5. e5
!! Now his knight is trapped.
                  • 5... Nf6g8
Very happy to force him back . But maybe he should have rather moved his knight to h7
