    very true, but even in a dark age, some light occasionally shines through: Money for Nothing, comes to mind.

    The 90s were even worse.

    Fortunately things are looking up now.

    And it was recently featured in an M&M's commercial. Really great 80's song, from a band I've never heard of.

    EDIT= I don't think the eighties were any darker than any other decade musically. It depends on where you look.

    i sort of agree, but i think it was necessary to look harder in the 80s.

    ok, 80s stuff i liked:

    Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), by David Bowie - esp. Ashes to Ashes;
    Trinity Sessions, by Cowboy Junkies;
    Faith, by The Cure, and to some extent, Disintegration;
    Streetcleaner, by Godflesh;
    Minor Threat
    some Talking Heads, esp. Burning Down the House, Psychokiller, Once in a Lifetime;
    Things Fall Apart, by Husker Du;
    Superfuzz Bigmuff, by Mudhoney;
    lots of Sonic Youth;
    Birthday Party / Bad Seeds.

    What the hell was wrong with the 80's?
    Well... besides Thatcherism, the haircuts and the clothing...

    Some of the best albums were made in the 80's:
    The river
    London Calling
    The Stone Roses
    The unforgettable fire

    And there were a lot of great hits as well:
    Time after time (Lauper)
    Karma Chameleon (Boy George)
    Like a virgin
    Boys don't cry

    However, I have to agree that there is the bitter after taste of "Wake me up before you go go" swirling in my brain as well. What was that all about?

    This is one that always fluctuates. Today it's:

    Eddie Money - Take Me Home Tonight

    I know, I know... But just give it another listen. I swear to god your hips and your shoulders will move:

    And if this video trips your trigger, might I suggest some Starship?

    What was wrong with the 80's? Oh my--where does one start. Disco finally died, but was replaced with something even more painful--punk. And new wave. And whatever Devo was. And didn't the end of the 80's bring us the true musical Armageddon that is hip-hop and rap? I'm not sure when those atrocities vame in--I've had my hands cupped over my ears since 1985. 🙂

    Punk? 80s? Mid-70s, surely.

    I agree with the others. Every generation has had rubbish music. The 80s is no worse than the others.
