Is REAPER any good?

I just started doing some home recording, and have been messing around with GarageBand. It's OK, but I'm thinking of upgrading to something that gives a bit more control. I've seen a lot of RHPer's talking about REAPER, just wondering how people would rate this as compared to Sonar, Cubase, ProTools, etc...
