I can't resist plugging a local act here in Champaign-Urbana. In my opinion one of the best guitar rock bands around: Hum. You've probably heard their hit, "Stars," recently on a Cadillac commercial. Check out this early song of theirs (ignore the poem at the beginning).

Yeah, they were pretty much a one hit wonder. Three of the four still live here in C-U, while the drummer married, became a pharmacist and moved out of town. They play reunion shows every several years though. Matt Talbott, the lead singer, owns a recording studio here and started a new band called, Centaur. Jeff Dimpsey, the bassist, helped form the band, National Skyline, and just recently, Gazelle. Tim Lash, the other guitarist, recorded an album with a former member of Love Cup; they called themselves, Glifted.

I like metal. Mastodon is my favourite metal band at the moment by far. I also enjoy Devin Townsend and all side projects, ISIS, Daughters, Pig Destroyer, Meshuggah and The Dillinger Escape Plan. I like it mathy, drony and epic.

Darv, you should checkout Devon's' Punky Bruster.

These threads always confuse me, what do you guys define as metal?
Anything that's outside the "Alternative" section of your C.D stores?

Currently really enjoying some of the older albums I have that I haven't listened to in a while:

    Dimmu Borgir
    In Flames
    Katatonia
    Strapping Young Lad
    Rammstein
Enter My Silence (Remote Controlled Scythe is one of their best, IMO)
    Slipknot
    System of A Down
    Tenacious D
Coheed and Cambria (This guy's head is going to explode... Too much going on there)

    Do you remember:

    Black Oak Arkansas
    Ted Nugent

Although they were probably a precursor to Metal. Seems we called it Hard Rock in those days.

    Also:

    The Smothers Brothers
    Sonny and Cher
    The Cowsills

These concerts were all about Bic lighters in the air and doing beer bongs and shotguns.
