    Whatever about Cobain (was an asshat in my opinion) Joe Strummer was a true hero spokesperson for an entire generation. His solo works are definitley work checking out. I recommend "Streetcore" By Joe strummer and the Mescaleroes. Or any of the work he did with Johnny Cash.
    One really good Clash album is one that is almost always overlooked - Give em Enough Rope.

    It is has a far harder punk/heavy rock edge than anything else that they ever did. If you are a Clash fan you must surely check it out.
