I had a go at writing a poem, someone will do better but here it is:

ROLLS OF HONOUR 1
Have you noticed, carved in stone,
Or graved on brass with steady hand,
Or gilded gold on polished wood.
Names of people quite unknown?
Neat capitals in lines and lines,
Again christened for constant respect
To prompt our fixed and unpaid debt,
And bring reverence to our busy minds.
Remembered then with solemn care,
‘Lest we forget’ they say.
Each name inscribed with due regard
So each remembered every year.
Monuments outlive that valiant race
Whose crumbled bones lie still.
And we with present gratitude recall
Ghosts with names but not a face.

ROLLS OF HONOUR 2
Our thoughts rudely dragged to times of war,
Dark days of mud, toxic smoke and gas.
Barbed wire and babble of incessant guns.
Before cold conflict ended in grateful thaw.
Now remember with imagination strained,
Young and old, trenches a surrogate home
To see raw desolation all around,
When only hope and quaking fear remained.
Our present peace bought by discarded dead.
Their names now carved in stone,
For debt we remembered but never paid.
A silent monument now echoes past dread.

Well done!

It's obviously impossible to capture, the horrors those brave lads experienced, through language and verse.
But that does not mean that we should not try. Putting words to our darkest imaginings, gleaned from a sincere passion for things passed, is noble and to be encouraged.
