This law is plainly justifiable IMO in that there are good reasons for it that have nothing to do with religion. Laws prohibiting identity concealing garments are on the books in many places.

But, my question is: Would this law be justifiable solely on the grounds that the burka is degrading to women?

FWIW, I say "no" to the latter.

Sounds crazy to me. If it's about 'identity concealing garments', pass a law banning 'identity concealing garments'. As it is it sounds suspiciously like an attack on their personal freedom, doesn't it?

I agree 100%. If there is a good reason why one shouldn't be able to conceal one's face in public, then the ban is justified, regardless of religious objections. And if women want to "degrade" themselves then they are free to. I still see women wearing uggs and despite their pathological masochism I don't see any good reason to ban uggs.

Fully justified. These hideously degrading garments have no place on the streets of any civilised nation.

So you do want to ban uggs?

Some are home-grown, others may be Afghan, Somalian, or whatever.
