    selling by wieght is exceedlingly more fair than the alternative. In the US we used to by ice cream in half gallons (64 liquid ounces) and quarts. We now buy ice cream in the 48 to 50 ounce range, yet is packaged to look the same as a half gallon. They did this almost overnight, and kept the price the same, which reflected a huge increase in cost

    the same has been done to other foods, potato chips being a notable stand out. They kept the cost steady while reducing the portion size in each bag.
