66 years old tomorrow (17th August)

Just back from the night-before neighbourhood party. About 300 people, under a tent stretched out across someones yard. Muslim, Protestant and Catholic prayers were said. Speeches about the state of the nation and the nationalist movement that kicked out the Dutch. A 30 minute mass walk around the neighbourhood. Stewed jackfruit on rice with chili. Glass of sweet tea. Numerous donated door prizes peaked with a mid-size TV and a bicycle. Day off tomorrow. Most people celebrating the month of fasting too. Happy Birthday Indonesia!

Here's a question asked by one of the speakers earlier:

Has Indonesia really achieved a meaningful independence when there are still so many people living in abject poverty and with the government still teeming with kleptocrats?

Quite frankly until people are prosecuted, even in their old age, for murdering a million in the Sukarno coup, I think Indonesia's politics are always going to be suspect to its people.

It is a remarkable nation in many respects however. Very diverse.

    And I love the cuisine!
