Well, in the 18th and 19th century there were mountain men hermits living by trapping and hunting and so forth but tell me what THAT kind of self reliance does to the overall population since a hermit living out in the wilds up north will not have children so a viable population of such individuals would be a bit hard to evolve.

Are you so stupid as to really think you are self reliant when our whole civilization is built on tiny growths of science and technology to the point now where anyone without a cell phone is ancient history now that the entire population is totally addicted to them, MUCH more than any heroin addict? Total in terms of the number addicted?
Or health care, or energy supplies, or getting food.
All that goes away in some disaster like those forest and brush fires destroying whole areas and now they don't have a local hospital because it burned down and no gas because gas stations burned down and no groceries because the mall burned down, tell us then just how 'self reliant' you will be.

You are right in that regard, so is Marauder. So, again, who is actually purely self-reliant? I guess no one, not even me, I need gas,.. sooooooo. Is self reliant an obsolete phrase, that only made sense with the fathers of the cave men.?
