What do you guys think about Israels response to Hamas' rocket attacks in September?
Is it justified or is Israel guilty of war crimes

Israel is guilty of war crimes as Hamas is.

The more precise question would be: under what conditions is retaliation a war crime?

And, is compassion possible while retaliating? Or are human beings taught that in war compassion is weakness

    Good questions here!

The obvious answer is: The purpose of war is to enforce ones view of things. The method is to disable the opposition to do anything but accept this view. If they don't eradicate them. Thus war is a really tough thing. In modern times societies have made some rules, e.g. regarding civilians as opposed to combattants. But who enforces those rules? Normally the victorious side, and they don't have much incentive to punish the people who won the victory for them...

But still there are humans fighting and some will show compassion no matter what.

It's a good thing you brought it up, as this wasn't discussed at all on this board at the time.

    You're new here, right?

This was done to death here at the time.

Are there conditions where retaliation makes actions that would be a war crime into not a war crime? Like if they target our civilians, can we target our enemy's civilians?

Of course. If someone else kills a bunch of people, you're not a real man if you don't kill a bunch of other people in response.

I think the proper description is government, not man. It is true that you are not a real government if you do not stop others from attacking your citizens, especially those citizens that are within your borders.

Killing foreign civilians doesn't protect anybody.

Destroying the missiles being launched into the country and killing the men doing it does.

Not destroying the missiles and not killing the people attacking your country does not protect anyone.

That's not true. If the UK army wasn't killing a few thousand civilians in Northern Ireland every now and again, wouldn't the IRA still be bombing people? You have to send a message, not have peace talks or something like a bunch of pansies.

That was not the scenario. He asked about deliberately targeting civilians.
