Why should we increase taxes if the government is just going to blow the money on crap like this?

What? You only want porn to be accessible to rich white folk?

They just need to continue their state of hypocrisy. Outlaw prostitution while funding porn which is the same thing as prostitution. It's kinda like giving subsidies to all the friends of the Obama administration or exemptions for Obamacare.

Because of the altruism your ancestors learned on the savanna. If you don't like it you're a deviant.

The title is false. All that was funded was a project which consisted of the following:

a feature-length documentary, Love Between the Covers, for international television broadcast, focusing on the global community of romance readers, writers, and publishers
an interactive, content-rich website created by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, allowing the website’s users to see romance novels in a broad context across time and place
an academic symposium on the past and future of the romance novel hosted by the Library of Congress Center for the Book
a nationwide series of library programs dealing with the past, present, and future of the romance novel, plus a traveling exhibit, organized by the American Library Association

    http://popularromanceproject.org/about/

There are lurid excerpts on the site you got this false claim from; they are from a book written by an author who received no government funding for doing so.

Some slight attempt at getting the facts straight is usually desirable before starting threads with hysterical titles.

A government-subsidized agency which focuses on the humanities funds a sociological study? Say it isn't so!

So you are saying that the government didn't blow the money on studying porn?

I'm saying that "Obama Funds Porn", the title you selected for this thread, is false.

This page from the site funded in small part by the government shows some of the areas of interest to it: http://popularromanceproject.org/category/talking-about-romance/

    Here's some "shocking" excerpts:

Scholar Eric Selinger looks at what makes the American HEA romance different from and similar to the global archetypal love story.

Readers of Jane Austen’s novels will be surprised by the combination of hard-headed financial advice and ironic comedy in this advice. Many such gems love, romance, and marriage abound on The Republic of Pemberley, a website dedicated to ”Jane Austen Fanatics,” especially the ”Truly Obsessed.”

Some people don't find ignorance as desirable as you do.

Studying porn is not an appropriate use of my money.

You mean like setting up a web site that even Helen Keller could do better job of preparing?

You mean like creating a massive health care policy and then blame insurance companies for its shortcomings, as if you could wash your hands of empowering them to create such shortcomings in the first place?

You mean like lying your arse off about rising rates and dropped health care policies because you just did not see that coming as well? Could it be you have no inkling as to how the free market actually works or will work?

They need to stick to porn I think. It's something they actually understand very well.

    Sure it is.

Look at it from the progressive viewpoint. It is their job to control society, so that means studying understanding every nook and cranny of such a society, no matter how depraved. Then you can use the information to further advance your agenda by the power that such knowledge brings you.

    These are fascists.

The study doesn't appear particularly useful to me, although it's probably more useful than most of the US' 684 billion (2011 figure) military budget.

If you don't like what the government is spending money on, there is a thing called "voting."
