Off-duty deputy praised for taking down gunman at Mayan 14 theater

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is calling one of their own a hero after deputies say she stopped what could have been a disastrous shooting inside a south-side movie theater lobby. view full article

(WOAI) Two people are hospitalized after a gunman chased terrified restaurant patrons into the lobby of the Santikos Mayan 14 movie theater during a showing of "The Hobbit" last night, 1200 WOAI news reprots.

Police detectives and sheriff's investigators say the incident started in the China Garden Restaurant on Southwest Military Drive about 9 PM Sunday, when an employee of the restaurant walked in looking for a woman.

When the woman, who officials say is also a restaurant employee, wasn't there, the man pulled a gun and attempted to open fire in the restaurant but his weapon jammed.

"It started at the restaurant and then went into the parking lot and then into the movie theater," Deputy Lou Antu told 1200 WOAI news.

Investigators say some of the terrified restaurant patrons poured into the movie theater, and the gunman followed.

He opened fire, shooting one man in the chest, before Antu says an off duty sheriff's deputy who was working security at the theater shot him once.

"The officer involved, she took the appropriate action to try to keep everyone safe in the movie theater," Antu said.

The gunman and the patron are hospitalized.

Antu says the gunman never made it into the theater itself, thanks largely to the heroic work of the off duty deputy.

"She did what she felt she had to do," Antu said. "I feel that she saved a lot of lives by taking the action she had to take."

Antu said the gunman, if he survives, will probably face a charge of attempted capital murder, for shooting at the San Antonio police car on Southwest Military Drive as he ran from the restaurant to the theater.

Officials didn't know what the relationship was between the gunman and the woman in the restaurant, or what his motivation was for the shooting.

Neither of the police officers involved, the officer driving the San Antonio Poilce car, or the off duty deputy in the theater, were hurt, Antu said.

Along the same lines, I saw a news interview with a CCW holder that was present at the recent mall shooting in Oregon. He said he had the bad guy in his sights but never took the shot for fear of missing and hitting someone past his target. He also said that after the shooter saw him only one more shot was fired when the guy killed himself.

    Edit: Found the video ...

Fortunate that an officer of the law was there.

And it should be noted that this was a professional, not Billy Bob Redneck totin' his six-shooter to Middle-Earth.

So if we had armed security guards in every kindergarten we'd reduce the likelihood of something like the Newtown massacre,.

Perhaps that would be something useful for the US military to do rather than occupying Afghanistan and sitting in bases "defending" Germany, Italy, etc . etc. etc.

That is a great idea. If only they would follow your suggestion.

Well said. And this is the soul reason America is in debt and spending to much money. It's our military spending of over 1 trillion ever year if you include the black book budget of the CIA of 500 billion every year. And there's no accountability for this money spent off the tax payers of America.
I'm all for a strong military but that is crazy. We spend more than almost the whole rest of the world put together.
And then the far right wing tea party freaks want to blame the poor and working class and the elderly and disabled of our society for our debt problem. What a joke.

One area of overspending doesn't negate the other.
