If Travis Reinking were black, he would have been incarcerated long ago or shot by police due his mental illness which led to a history of bizarre public behaviors. Instead, the police handed his guns over to his father who proceeded to give them back to his son who then murdered four people Sunday. My opinion: Fire the police officers who returned the weapons and charge the father with acessory to a murder and lock him up for the maximum term allowed under current law. A brave young black man stepped up and heroically risked his own life to save more people from being murdered.

To the credit of the NY Times they didn't make this about race. To everyone's dismay here phranny felt the need to play the race card.

You almost sound surprised about this. At least enough to feel it deserves special acknowledgment. What if the perp were black and the guy who stopped more murders was white? Would you feel compelled to point out their races? Is it only newsworthy to you and worthy of mentioning races if the perp is white and the hero is black? Do you think that’s so unusual?

    The News is:
It didn't took a good guy with a gun...
the hero had no gun and didn't shoot (as far as I understand the Story).

    Another myth debunked...

Yup preventing nuts from having military type weapons is again shown to be a silly, "liberal" idea.

I only added this part because of a few frequent visitors to this site who have indicated they feel black people are inherently inferior to whites. I too applaud the NYT's for not noting this man's race. I certainly did not men to perpetuate racist views.

    --Phranny

Counterexample to Phranny's ignorant political dogma:

Colin Ferguson was a black man who was convicted of murdering six people in 1993.
Despite evidence of his apparently increasing mental instability, the 'racist system' failed
to prevent Colin Ferguson from killing six (non-black) people.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_Long_Island_Rail_Road_shooting

"Ferguson moved back to New York City in May 1993, because, he told a friend, he did
not like competing with immigrants and Hispanics for jobs.[9] Denis, his Flatbush landlord,
said Ferguson appeared even more unstable upon his return, speaking in the third person
about "some apocryphal-type doom scenario" that included black people rising up and striking
down "their pompous rulers and oppressors".[10] Ferguson started taking five showers a
day and could be heard by neighbors repeatedly chanting at night, "all the black people
killing all the white people".[10] Denis became increasingly concerned about Ferguson's
obsession with racism and apparent growing mental instability, and asked Ferguson to
move out by the end of the month.[10]"

"Police detectives later said it appeared Ferguson had been planning the shooting for more
than a week. Chief Joseph Flynn of the Long Island Rail Road police said, "This was the
work of a deranged, maniacal person who for a variety of reasons decided to explode.""

"Ferguson's trial proved to be bizarre, as he cross-examined the police officers that arrested
him and victims he shot. ... He also found another man who was willing to testify that the
government implanted a computer chip in Ferguson's brain, but at the last minute decided
not to call him to the stand.[44] This individual, Raul Diaz, was a parapsychologist from
Manhattan and claimed during a press conference on the courthouse steps to have witnessed
an Oriental man press a chip into Ferguson's head prior to the attack.[45] According to Diaz,
the Oriental man told him to behold what he was about to do prior to pushing the button.
"He was lasered out by a remote-control device," Diaz told reporters outside the courtroom."
The sinister mysterious evil 'Oriental man' was responsible--what an excuse!

My point is that not even a 'racist system' can always prevent an evidently mentally ill
black man from committing mass murder in the USA.

The type: assault rifle is the Problem, not the specific model.

But you knew that very well, you just try to Point to minor Details to look away from the big Picture.
