Your corporate news media is not telling you everything. Why do you think Kiev was changed in spelling? We are even pronouncing it differently now because the news media is. When the Russians claimed that the Nazis were trying to purge the Russian language from Ukraine they were not lying.
Russians are fighting Nazis. Most Russians feel the fight is justified to protect ethnic Russians there.

Ukraine did ban Russian (and Hungarian in the West) as official language in 2017 (I think). Demoting it to regional language.
I.e. Ukrainian is the only language high schools and universities are allowed to teach in (other languages are allowed to be taught though).
Considering some regions don’t have Ukrainian as a first language, that’s kind of nasty.

In 2012 the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) reported that "tolerance towards Jews, Russians and Romani appears to have significantly declined in Ukraine since 2000 and prejudices are also reflected in daily life against other groups, who experience problems in accessing goods and services"
Although I would presume that very few people welcome war, not everyone was enjoying the free and democratic Ukraine as the beacon of selfless love and joy it’s seemingly being made out to be.

of the Taliban back into Afghanistan when the US/allies pulled out.

Ordinary Russians in Russia would be just as angry if the Kremlin dictatorship would let them get a whiff of the reality of what’s going on in Ukraine.
They are killing civilians at range because they now know for a fact that these civilians will resist them unto death if they get close enough and man for man the Ukrainian military will kick their delusional ass.
The only thing that’s saving Putin’s cowardly skin is his nuclear arsenal.
