Some writers here have been treating New Zealand as though it were
an Arcadia unspoiled by the common troubles of the outside world.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2019/mar/15/christchurch-shooting-injuries-reported-as-police-respond-to-critical-incident-live

"Christchurch shooting: multiple fatalities after mass shooting at two mosques"

"Police commissioner Mike Bush has warned: “No one in the
country must go to a mosque under any circumstances.”

"[Prime MInister] Ardern is asked if she would describe this attack as a
hate crime, she says: “I would describe it as an unprecedented act of violence.”

No official figures of casualties have been released so far.

For whatever it's worth, the right-wing (Islamophobic) British tabloid 'The Daily Mail'
claims that at least 27 people have been killed by an Australian white supremacist,
who admires Anders Breivik and Donald Trump.

    We thought we were.

Everyone is absolutely shocked and saddened by this awful tragedy.

Heck, I was shocked. I thought this only happened in America. Turns out, there are anti-social a-holes everywhere.

Maybe this is an end of innocence. If this can happen in NZ, nowhere is safe.

Up until today our worst mass shooting was in 1990 when 13 were murdered.
    That was a deranged individual.

    Today's outrage is terrorism.
Police have arrested 4 and described them as a "cell".
It is strongly suspected they have support. Is this the
new world we are entering? Right-wing terrorism?

I’d still love to come and live in if not just visit your wonderful country Wolfie. I’m sure the steps of separation between people are much closer there than they are in other countries.

I’m sure that the best meant thoughts and the sincere prayers of good people all around the world are with New Zealand and it’s people today.

No1 will tell you that it depends on whether the protagonists viewed the victims as “legitimate targets” in a war.

    Thank you.

I guess I'm becoming more Kiwi but this attack
is very upsetting and almost personal.
Some of my family have been in tears.

Despite all the psychologist waffle that goes on, proximity makes a huge difference to the impact these catastrophies have on people, as does frequency and expectancy.

An event like this in a relatively small population on a perceived idillic Island(s) with little or no immediate exposure to terrorism, is going to rock the country (and much of the world in fact) to its core.

It’s almost as though it was planned from outside, but I’m being very premature and speculative of course.
