A judge has criticised a social services department for failing to take an 11-year-old boy into care weeks before he raped a disabled youngster

11-yr-old rapists? just what the hell is wrong with this world?

Why is it better when rapists are older?

Nothing that was not wrong with it in the 14th century (not a pleasant time in Europe anyway, what with the Black Death, burning of heretics, torture as the normal way to get evidence in trials, terrible pogroms against Jews, grotesque and incessant violence - oh why continue the list?) or for that matter the majority of the Twentieth (similar list, what with people never changing). Happily, today we have resources in the UK at least to address the welfare of troubled youngsters and, as the judge rightly observed in this case, it is shameful when those resources let us down. Yep we have not got it right yet but it is not helpful to allow the media to generate a moral panic.

We humans are but a curse and a blessing to anything which we have contact. Even unto ourselves. Humans have exvolved greatly but we have far to go.

On the other hand, this 11 year old child was probably beaten and raped by his father, who in turn was probably gang-raped by uncles in the 1950's.

Humans are nothing but a product of their environment.

If you are fostering any delusion that there is a history of childhood innocence in Europe then give up now. Regarding the 14th Century one theory is that men were atrociously violent at that time because of the extent to which they were neglected and / or abused as children. Child mortality was so high that it was also argued that adults saw little merit in giving them much attention. Children as such are scarcely mentioned in the records of those times, and not at all outside of the higher nobility. I can give sources for each of those remarks. By the age of 14 or less boys were likely to be found alongside adults in battles which were not only brutal on the field of battle but also preceded and followed by mindless carnage as the participants foraged for food, plunder and pillage. However, to be balanced, I notice that chess was played.

in that case I think a better question would be "what the hell is wrong with europe?"

Look, it is not ok to have an 11 year old rapist but neither is it indicative that our World is collapsing around us. So when you ask what is wrong with ...[ the World / Europe] you appear to imply that the news of this child's actions lead you to feel despondent about ... [the World / Europe].

I am suggesting that it is not such an indicator. It is not ok and it cries out for a remedy but it is not grounds for despondency nor for what is often termed "moral panic."

So medieval Asia was somehow better? Appalling cruelties happen and have happened at all times and in all places. And decent people have always been shocked by them, and, with varying degrees of success, have tried to find remedies.
