It seems that the whole world is outraged over Ray Rice punching his wife in an elevator. However, just a few months earlier, everyone made fun of Jay-Z for getting attacked by Solange in an elevator.

    Quick rhetorical rant:

    1) So many people speculated that it was Jay-Z's fault. Things like marriage problems and Solange defending her sister were offered. Whatever the case, why was it okay to blame the victim for getting attacked? Why can't we ask the same questions for Ray Rice's wife?

    2) If was Jay-Z doing the exact same thing to Beyonce's sister that she did to him, would it be okay to mock Solange for getting attacked?

    Rant over. Back to topic.

Here's the question. At what point would it have been okay for Jay-Z to hit Solange back? What is the maximum number of blows a woman can give before it's acceptable for a man to hit her back, assuming he didn't initiate the fight?

Final question: Suppose a three hundred pound woman (think Monique from the movie 'Precious' ) hit a man with Jim Carrey's build. Does the maximum number of hits she can give before the man can hit her back change?

In women's boxing matches, but only for as long as the referee allows.

i think they key point here is that the people who made fun of jay-z for getting attacked were idiots.

it is equally disgusting for a woman to attack a man as it is a man a woman.

if it is self defence the law (in the uk) is that a person must use appropriate force. appropriate being the minimum force needed to make yourself safe. the sex of the individual is irrelevant,

If a woman starts punching you it's OK to punch back.
    As hard as you can.
They want to fall back on being treated like a lady then they need to act like a lady.
Hitting you and going boo-hoo if you hit back is no reason for sympathy because they have a vagina.
    Same with kids.
If a twelve year old tries to hit you then it should be OK to smack them across the mouth and let them know what time it is.

Why is it OK to give people special treatment due to have the right sex organs in one situation, but not in another. I'm a bit confused. I thought we were living in an equal Society.

let's extend that: hitting someone who is weaker than you is acceptable when that someone is about to kill you.

if your opponent is the world female kickboxing champion and you are a 1.70 m skinny guy with asthma, feel free to (try to) hit her after the first provocation.

Yeah, except that as vivify showed, society-at-large clearly does not think that it's OK to hit a woman even when it would've been commendable to hit a man in the same situation. And I agree that this makes one want to ask how this constitutes equality.

    Oh come on now.

Let's say you get into an argument with your girlfriend in a restaurant. You say something that offends her. She slaps you in the face.

    Realistically now,

You'd just slap her back in public? Imagine you're really in that situation, and not on your phone reading a post on a message board. People are looking at you. Are you saying you'd really hit her back in that situation?

Keep in mind that the world is full of Finnegan's, who think even discussing the idea of self-defense against women is "sick". Would you still hit her back?

Under the same conditions as when it is okay to hit a man: when it is consensual (and both are adults) or when there is an immediate threat that can only be averted through violence.

What makes you think it was acceptable for the women to hit the man in that scenario?
