@moonbus saidWhy would "planting a flag" imply exclusive use of the field?
Whoever plants a flag on it, I guess. That is, until there’s an internationally recognized agreement.
Why would an "internationally recognized agreement" be binding on everyone including those who are not parties to it?
Obviously, this is a philosophical question, not merely a legal one.
@mott-the-hoople saidNo one that we know of.
who lives on mars?
No people lived on Earth before about 100,000 years ago; who owned fields here then?

@no1marauder saidWhy would a pope have authority to draw a line on a map, which didn’t even show more than the partial coast line of an unexplored continent, giving everything on one side to the Portuguese and everything on the other side to the Spanish ? I dunno. You tell me. Seems at least as sensible as claiming an entire continent for having plonked down a flag on its beach.

Seriously though, there is an international agreement regarding Antarctica. Could happen with respect to extra terrestrial bodies, too. Much preferable to unilateral acquisitions, subject, of course, to verifiable enforceability conditions.

@moonbus saidI wasn't really thinking about countries per se. More like, what gives Guy A the legitimate power to say "1000 acres of Martian dirt is now my property and no one can use it without my permission."

Saying Country Z gave him that power is just kicking the can down the road.
@no1marauder saidNot a clue as to what comment you are talking about.

EDIT: I just realized that was a bad pun.

@no1marauder saidEvolution of this human Earth, as decided by humans, along with all that went into it one way or another. You picked a great fantasy thread with really no point except that’s the human world we created from that beginning time you mentioned or another world (that could be different?) we live in. Just more ideas of this crazy culture thought processes we’re all stuck in right now until fantasy land explodes.

I'm also going to use your garage.
I forgot to mention I'm renting out your basement now.
You're ok with this?

@booger saidAnarchists prefer the word "possession" to "personal property" but the basic gist is the same:
So I can just park in your driveway?
I'm also going to use your garage.
I forgot to mention I'm renting out your basement now.

"Anarchists define "private property" (or just "property," for short) as state-protected monopolies of certain objects or privileges which are used to exploit others. "Possession," on the other hand, is ownership of things that are not used to exploit others (e.g. a car, a refrigerator, a toothbrush, etc.). Thus many things can be considered as either property or possessions depending on how they are used. For example, a house that one lives in is a possession, whereas if one rents it to someone else at a profit it becomes property. Similarly, if one uses a saw to make a living as a self-employed carpenter, the saw is a possession; whereas if one employs others at wages to use the saw for one's own profit, it is property."
