"The American civil war didn't end. And Trump is a Confederate president.
His supporters hark back to an 1860s fantasy of white male dominance.
But the Confederacy won’t win in the long run."
    --Rebecca Solnit

"Its premise appears to be that protection of others limits the rights
of white men, and those rights should be unlimited. The Brazilian
philosopher of education Paulo Freire once noted that “the oppressors
are afraid of losing the ‘freedom to oppress’”. Of course, not all white
men support extending that old domination, but those who do see
themselves and their privileges as under threat in a society in which
women are gaining powers, and demographic shift is taking us to a
US in which white people will be a minority by 2045."

Dear Duchess - The Confederacy didn't win in the short run either. Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865.

For someone who prides herself on her knowledge of history, you're some 150+ years off. Better check your math! 😀

This would not be unlike a conservative saying "Who really won the cold war?" and then posting some quotes about how Marxist professors are destroying American education and making big decisions on Europe's future.

    Very partisan.

Not wrong, but certainly very partisan to bring out these views, and as this is a very widely discussed theme here, I am not sure if it merits a whole new thread of just this hot take on the "Civil War actually being still happening!" because orange man bad.

The racist troll Mchill shows ignorance of the fact that Robert E. Lee's surrender did NOT
signify the cessation of all Confederate resistance. The Army of Northern Virginia
was not the only CSA army. Indeed, CSA President Jefferson Davis hoped that the
other CSA armies in the field would keep fighting or that loyal Confederates would
wage a partisan war against the US occupation.

The only thing that happened was to more or less stop slavery but at a cost of over a million lives on both sides. It is clear there is smoldering hatred of southeners for the northerns. Trump enabled all of that. The incidence of violence since 2016 has gone up over 50% and more than that lately. All caused by the incendiary speech by Trump. 100% caused by Trump, the enabler in chief.

That has nothing to do with the fact that Trump cannot stop lying AND spouting incendiary speech inciting hatred, bigotry and division. He panders to fear, spouting the crap about the caravan as if it is an armed contingent of the Iranian army with tanks and planes. THAT is fear mongering at its worse and if you don't see that you are beyond redemption.

The sad part is Trump doesn't believe a word he utters, he ONLY says that to pander to his base to try to preserve his power. He is interested in one thing and one thing only: Trump.

“there is smoldering hatred of southeners for the northerns”

To make a blanket statement like this requires defining “southerners” as those possessing such hatred. Edit: How prevalent do you think it is?

Trump is a Yankee. He's a WASP gunboat President businessman - a walking stereotype of an American President - the greedy "American Imperialist" stereotype. He represents the kind of people who are blamed for inflicting the "War of Northern Aggression" on the South.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpetbagger

In the history of the United States, a carpetbagger was any person from the Northern United States who came to the Southern states after the American Civil War and was perceived to be exploiting the local populace. The term broadly included both individuals who sought to promote Republican politics (which favored, among other things, better treatment of freedmen), and those individuals who saw business opportunities because of the chaotic state of the local economies following the war

    (JS357 replied to Sonhouse.)

A significant proportion of people today in the states of the former CSA did not
grow up there but migrated from non-Southern states or even other countries.

Just more in a long line of attempts to sow discord in the U.S.
It's happening all over the social media-sphere.
We would do well to remember this.

Hell, I'm wondering who really won the Revolution.

All we get are globalists trying to make the US like Europe.

The lying hateful racist troll Wolfe63 loves to wave the US flag as jingoistic theater.

In my original post, I cited an article by Rebecca Solnit, who's a white American.
