"Why We Wear the Burkini: Five Women on Dressing Modestly at the Beach"

    1) "I am a Muslim woman and I am proud to be recognised as one."
    --Anonymous (age 26, London)

    2) "I'm never dependent on a man to make me feel beautiful."
    --Aisha (age 29, Birmingham)

    3) "I don't wish to be the prey of ogling men."
    --Fafa (age 33, Singapore)

    4) "I am not a victim; no man makes me dress this way."
    --Amera (age 36, Yorkshire)

    5) "I am commanded by Allah to be modest."
"...I'm white British and a revert Muslim. I can be both British and Muslim."
    --Jess (age 44, Bedford)

Please note that there some differences in the views of these five Muslim women.
The only convert to Islam seems to be one of the most conservative about attire.

at last, we are agreed, the burkini is religious garb.

Suzianne recently pointed out (again) Robbie Carrobie's poor reading comprehension.
The *quoted* statements by Aisha, Fafa, and Amera do *not* explicitly mention their
religion, though these women may discuss their faith in statements that I did not quote.

I expect this thread to be full of bigoted men sneering at Muslim women.

Is that really the only thing you took away from what she wrote?

Only two of the five even mentioned religion.

Muslims consider the Quran to be written by Muhammad, and that "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger." Therefore they believe the Quran to be the word of Allah.

No voices in the head needed.

Are you seriously trying to tell the forum that all of these women are not Muslims and have no personal vested interest in the issue as a direct consequence of their religious affiliations? No, well a little intellectual honesty please. Suzianne is unstable and cannot be relied upon as a character witness.

They wear burkinis because they are retarded.
Only seriously retarded people wear head to toe clothing in 30 degrees heat.

I don't care what sort of excuse they've convinced themselves of... Retards.

In some Muslim nations, that temperature is much higher.

So? Only makes them even more retarded.

Take the English. If English, do not go to the Arabian desert and sunbath in your spidos. That too is retarded.

that's their decision. also, nobody says they have to go out at noon. also some heat is better dealt with some nice roomy robes than having the sun beat straight on one's skin. also, it's none of your damn business.

The Quran does mention modesty in dress. Muslims vary in how to interpret it.

Maria Toorpakay Wazir, a Pakistani professional squash player, has written a memoir
in English (with the help of a ghost writer) _A Different Kind of Daughter_ (2016).
A Pashtun, she was born into an extremely conservative tribal region in Pakistan.
Her father was (and is) a strong supporter of women's rights and education.
With the support of her Muslim parents, for the first 16 years of her life Maria Toorpakay
dressed like a boy and pretended to be male in order to enjoy more opportunities, including
participating in sports (such as weightlifting and squash). Maria Toorpakay and her family
(her sister is a member of Pakistan's parliament) have received death threats from the Taliban.
She now lives alone in Toronto, Canada.

That's your own bigotry at work, D. Try to recognize it.

And they should be able to wear whatever they want, of course.

Sleepyguy shows his willful blindness toward the reality of anti-Muslim bigotry in this forum.
In fact, many writers (all men, as far as I know) have made many bigoted comments against
Muslims, including against Muslim women. It's clear that many men here disrespect
Muslim women, including ignoring or dismissing the diverse voices of Muslim women.
Therefore, it's reasonable for me to expect that anti-Muslim bigotry to continue in this thread.
My expectation is based only upon the long record of anti-Muslim bigotry in this forum.

Indeed, Phil3000, Robbie Carrobie, and Shavixmir have shown disrespect toward (or sneered at)
Muslim women and what they have to say about their motives for choosing their attire.

Would Sleepyguy claim that I must be 'bigoted' if I wrote that I expect racist comments at a KKK meeting?
My expectation would be based only upon the KKK's long record of racism.
